Any of you who have visited Cranmere Pool, the historic birthplace of
letterboxing in Dartmoor, or may be planning to visit it sometime in
the near future, may want to consider signing a petition against
closing the Loop Road that takes you within an hours walking from the
Pool. If this road is closed it will take over a four hour round trip
to reach it.
The petition proposes that the army, which built the Loop Road and
has been allowed to use Dartmoor National Park as a firing ground for
many decades, should help the local government to repair the road,
rather forcing it to be permanently closed.
The petition closes soon, so don't put this off if you want to
participate. I'm hopeful that a response from some of us American
Dartmoor enthusiasts will help them realize how much of an impact
this decision could have on the tourism trade.

Thanks for sharing this petition, Der Mad Stamper. I've signed it --
and then took a peek at the other signatures. Interestingly (to me),
my signature (Paula Hansen, CA) was immediately preceded by a similar
signature (Paula Hinsen, PA). At first, I thought I'd accidentally
hit the button twice or something. Hoping the petition has the
desired effect, whether or not I ever make it to England & Dartmoor.

I am not trying to burst your bubble, but online petitions do not
hold any weight. If you go to www.snopes.com, which is a site to
quell or verify myths and legends When you get to the site type in
the topic of your question or statement it will tell you whether or
not it's true--- In letterbox-usa@yahoogroups.com, "Der Mad Stamper"

Well I'm not in favor of this petition, but citing snopes and giving
them the weight that you have can be one of the many misuses of snopes.
Many folks cite snopes in hope that it may deter someone from following
up.I'm not saying that is the reason here, only want to spellout snopes
validity.
Snopes is given way too much credence, particularly if you do some
checking on them. Using wikipedia, snopes and generally googling topics
and then making your own decisions are a far better method than using
snopes alone to debunk myths and legends.
If you check wikipedia under the topic "online petitions" you will find
that under the sub topic "Electronic Petitions and e-government" there
is sufficient governmental use in Australia that does lend credence to
online petitions.
I'm sure that there may be differences of opinions on the use of
wikipedia as well as snopes, but my only point is use more sources and
don't consider that snopes is the ultimate answer.
I do not mind the road closure for access in this instance. It is
closed many times during the year right now due to military operations.

I only know that some of Dartmoor's most long-time dedicated
letterboxers have asked me to bring the petition to your attention.
Apparently, they think it will help their cause. The very fact that the
people who use the moors the most want the road to stay open is good
enough for me. It took me 60 seconds to acknowledge my support for
their cause. If it was 60 seconds of my life wasted, then I think I can
live with that. If it was 60 seconds spent to help support something
that has the backing of the very people who made this hobby what it is,
then that's even better. --DMS

P.S. --
Even if an e-petition makes no difference to the Duchy of Cornwall or
the British Army, I suspect it would at least show the Dartmoor
letterboxing community that we support their concerns about the hobby.
Eleven years ago, I witnessed the wrath of many British 'boxers who
really didn't like the idea of us Yanks stealing their hobby. I'm glad
to say that since then the majority of Dartmoor's finest have now
finally accepted our participation in their elusive hobby, and have
welcomed American visitors with open arms and full pint glasses.
I'm hearing from the true elders of letterboxing that they don't want
the Loop Road to go away, and they are asking for our support. Then I
read posts from various sources by Americans who have never even been
to Dartmoor but insist that they would prefer to have the road closed.
I shake my head and wonder... if we can't manage to show any solidarity
whatsoever with our British cousins, do we even have the right to call
ourselves letterboxers?

As stated in my post regarding online petitions they do have value,
but while closure of this road is opposed by many in the UK, my guess
is that there are those in the UK that do not oppose road closure. I
believe that many folks can disagree on the topic and still consider
themselves letterboxers whether that be in the UK or the US.

You're right, Don. After re-reading my last post, I can see that I'm
interjecting too much emotion into this. And I'm doing a terrible job
of explaining where my thoughts are coming from.
I guess I'm just trying my best to avoid name-dropping, but still let
people know that it's not just a bunch of slackers who are too lazy to
get out and walk the moors who are opposed to this road closing. They
are quite literally the "who's who" of letterboxing pioneers and the
Dartmoor 100 Club.
I've been in contact with some of these people for many years, and
these are the people to whom we owe the existence of our hobby. They're
the people that you've read about in that famous magazine article, and
the people who planted most of the truly classic Dartmoor boxes. These
are the people whom I most respect, and it's obvious to me that they do
not want this road to go away.
I guess I sense that these "elders of letterboxing" feel they have
shared the moors with the military, but are now being forgotten. These
folks have devoted their lives to the moors and, as they approach their
golden years, fear they will no longer be able to return to their old
stomping grounds.
When we're young and healthy, it's easy to say, "make them work for
it." But I think these folks deserve more respect than that. Just my
opinion, so I will shut up now. Thanks to those who've listened.

Mitch,
I thought your response was very good - and I think it is important for us
to give a little loyalty back to those who originated our hobby. In my
opinion, letterboxing is a game that constantly evolves and changes as new
members come in and other members leave, and it is easy to forget those who
came before us as the game changes.
Whether the poll has credence or not with the Whoever Matters, the fact that
we show solidarity with those who were a building block between the origins
of letterboxing and today is a good thing, and I appreciate you bringing it
to the forefront.

to give a little loyalty back to those who originated our hobby. In my
opinion, letterboxing is a game that constantly evolves and changes as new
members come in and other members leave, and it is easy to forget those who
came before us as the game changes.
Whether the poll has credence or not with the Whoever Matters, the fact that
we show solidarity with those who were a building block between the origins
of letterboxing and today is a good thing, and I appreciate you bringing it
to the forefront.

Thanks, Lucy... I'm glad to hear that my random thoughts are beginning
to make some sort of cohesive sense to someone! :)
And, Don... I'm certain that you're absolutely right in assuming there
are two sides to the story, even in Dartmoor. In fact, my first
reaction was also to favor closing the road, until I realized whom it
might affect the most.

To gwendontoo, thanks for pointing out, one opinion is not such a good
idea. I will research things further in the future. I thought I had
an open mind, but you obviously have opened it further. I have been
boxing for 2 years and do not just do drive bys. I am 69 years old and
have walked several miles to get to a box. Got poison ivy for the
first time in my life last year, got lost in a marsh after dark with
the coyotes yelping all around me and all the other things we all
experience looking for boxes. I am certainly not a seasoned boxer like
some, but I do consider myself somewhat experienced. I have never been
to Dartmoor and will never get there, but I do respect the choice of
those who have been and our founding fathers. I have tried to do my
reasearch, but do not know much about those who gave us this wonderful
hobby (addiction). If someone is willing to give me info on them or
tell me where I can find the info I would welcome it. I didn't mean
for my comment to become a big subject of conversation. I will truly
do my research before I make any more comments.--- In letterbox-

I don't believe that your comment was the total subject of the
conversation. When I responded to yours it was meant in a 'general' way
as far too many people rely on snopes for the ultimate answer. That is
why I said what I did...
"I'm not saying that is the reason here, only want to spellout snopes
validity."
The folks behind snopes are human and can and do make mistakes.
Not having been to Dartmoor is no reason to stay out of the
topic/conversation. So while at a really old age (just kidding I'm 67)
of 69 you should keep on putting your two cents in. Wisdom doesn't come
early.
You should consider plugging in a trip to Dartmoor as it is a fantastic
spot. While most letterboxers think of all those boxes, I spent more
time looking at the archilogical sites and Gwen loved the ponies.

Well, you know, I didn't intend for this whole thread to go on as
long as it has, but comments tend to take on a life of their own, so
I should know better. But, please don't feel like that's a reason to
keep quiet or feel that your comments aren't welcome just because
someone has another opinion. We all have different ways of seeing
things, and that doesn't mean that anyone is right or wrong. I would
like to think that we're just having a friendly discussion among
civilized people who are united by a common interest in letterboxing.
Besides, you had a valid point about e-petitions not being worth
much, and Snopes is a perfectly valid reference to make that point.
On the other hand, Don is right about Snopes not being infallable,
and he's also correct in pointing out that the Loop Road into north
Dartmoor is somewhat of a spoiler, from an historical perspective.
And I know that I have a valid point in saying that the road does
serve an important purpose for some people. There's almost always
more than one way to look at a topic, and there's nothing wrong with
sharing your opinion and giving us all something to think about.
(Well... other than the fact that when you argue with me, you're
arguing with a madman, and how sane is that, really?)
Oh, and have I mentioned lately that there are no ugly stamps? Anyone
who disagrees is just wrong... wrong I tell you! Wrong.
Just joking.

I needed a good laugh at 5AM. If I could only figure out what the
rice pudding looks like, I would put it out there. You started my
day off on a good note.
I will continue to give comments, but as stated before I will do my
research first.
I would still like some info on our founding fathers/mothers. Names
and where I can check them out. One of elders in NYS quit putting
out boxes and withdrew all of them. I am sorry for that as I met her
and went boxing with her 3 times when I went to Syracue to visit my
niece. They were all very cryptic and you had to do research and
puzzles to find the stamps. It helped to keep my brain working as
well as my feet. Her clues sometimes were in story form. I know she
put a lot of work into them.--- In letterbox-

You may also want to read about Dartmoor History, the first 15 Dartmoor boxes and the First State boxes (that details the first letterbox planted in each state with its current status. Status is based on reports that we receive via email so they may not be current.)

Re: [LbNA] history (was Re: Dartmoor's Cranmere Pool - ROAD CLOSED??)

Keep in mind that this "history" some refer to
generally means the "post Smithsonian" era, which
means +04/98. There is, of course, "history" in
American letterboxing before then.
This has the effect of making alot of "first this/
first that" wrong. Moreover, there are other
inaccuracies here and there. Since this list
doesn't go back to 04/98, you have to find the
personal e-mail records of the people who where there
to sort it all out. Etiquette prevents posting these
on the web, otherwise it would be kinda cool.
So, like most things, this "history" is in the eye
of the beholder, and, as in all history, subject to
revision (unintentional and intentional) by various
commentators over the years.
That said, it was my impression that the original
comment on history and founding (*)thers was querying
information on non-Americans.
Cheers
Randy

For a madman you have a distressingly balanced point of view.

wants to learn what letterboxing is truly about.

And continue reading those messages forward starting from the first that
Brian referenced.
We would venture to say that it's required reading for those that want to
learn about the early days of this pastime.

Once again, uneksia, you hit the nail on the head.
"How can we letterbox in the present if we don't know the past?"

Unfortunately, I think it's entirely possible to letterbox in the present
without knowing the past - in the same sense that you can read Shakespeare
in Cliff Notes without sitting through the play.
The game is so much richer when you know its roots!
